Getting the baby to sleep...
On Becoming Baby Wize by Gary Ezzo
Before Dale and I were able to have children, we would occasionally baby sit for friends. One couple had three children with the most amazing sleep habits we had ever seen. When it was time to go to sleep, you just took the baby into his room, layed him in his crib and walked out. He seemed to go instantly to sleep. Their two older girls also had no problem going into their rooms and falling (seemingly) instantly to sleep. When we got pregnant with our first son, I called the mom and asked about how she did it. She highly recommended this book, but also cautioned that it's something you really need to pray about... because it's somewhat controversial and may not be for everyone. We bought the book, used the method, and have had fantastic results. Our older son now is able to easily and almost instantly go to sleep at night and for naps during the day. We plan to use the same method with our younger son (to be born near the end of March 2007). I personally highly recommend this book. |

Our first baby was a miracle after a 14 year wait. As the mother of a miracle, I spent a lot of nights checking and re-checking to make sure he was breathing.* This monitor saved my sanity. It "feels" the child breathing, will sound an alarm if it doesn't feel any movement. You have to use some care in setting the sensitivity so you don't get a lot of false alarms... but we didn't really have any trouble with that. I slept so well after getting this monitor, because any time I woke in the night I could just listen for those "click, click, clicks" and know the baby was safe and sound. I love this thing and am definitely using it on with new baby too.

*God allows the rain to fall on the just and the unjust - we live in a fallen world and despite popular teaching, terrible tragedies DO happen to Christians every day. I watched the horrific aftermath of one of my Christian college professors losing his beautiful baby girl to SIDS. And, even closer to home, I watched my own little brother die as a child after battling leukemia for several years. My concern for my son isn't a matter of a "lack of faith" in God, but rather a very acute understand of the fact that God may choose to allow tragedy in my life.

Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp
Several families at the ministry absolutely love this book. Kirk loves it so much that he had Tedd Tripp as a featured guest just a couple of months ago when he hosted the Praise the Lord show on TBN. Our older son is not yet two, so we don't have personal experience with the method taught... but just in studying it I can tell you that it is 100% biblical. |
